The photo is my son and myself. Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.
Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. Gardening can be very interesting and educational. You never know what you might see when you go out.
Wave Petunias will trail over the pot or basket. These are different than regular petunias and can make a beautiful trailing plant for the summer.
These are zucchini plants that are still in the area that I keep young plants to protect them. I moved most of the plants out to other areas in the yard but left these. Now that they are blooming the lid must be left up because they need to be pollinated by the bees.
Peppers and Egg plants need to be staked for support or will fall over. These are growing very well in the pots.
Okra in pots. I normally plant only one plant per pot but this year I wanted to try to grow multiple okra in a pot just to see what it would do to save space. I will continue to follow this study.
We have perenials and herbs all around our backyard paths. These are coneflowers and rosemary to the back right.
We made A frames to go over the plants that climb. These are cucumbers.
The Hot Pepper wagon
Another climbing cucumber. This one is in partial shade, I will update how it grows.
Tomato wagon with A frame. These tomatoes needed water. I try to keep their moisture even so they don't get blossom end rot but the dry soil was unexpected. It has been raining a slow rain for several days. Sometimes the containers need a boost of watering because rain does not always get into the pots.
We have been adding arbors to our yard over the last several years. It adds shade and a place for trailing flowers and vegetables to grow in a small backyard.
Cucumbers and roses
These are our surprise potatoes. They grew from some compost.
Another view of one of the A frames. The concrete blocks are there because there are strawberries growing around the cucumbers. We have to make use of every inch of the yard.
Just another view of one of the keyhole planters.
This sage was a mess after winter. It was leggy and all over the place. I cut it back to only a foot high early march and this is early may. The pruning really helped this older plant that is in a large pot.
Backyard Gardening can be very educational. I see new things every day in our backyard.
