About gDonna
The photo is my son and myself. Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.

Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. Now is the time...

Now is the time....

People seem to have an attitude that they are owed something or want to blame all the time.  We cannot blame the sun because it is hot.  We cannot blame the rain because it is wet. We cannot be angry and mad because a serious virus is disrupting our lives. It is like blaming a bird because it was not a cow, it makes no sense.

There is a lot of bad behavior going on right now and I am shocked at people that cannot tell a pandemic virus from a turnip.

Charles and I have decided that we can only take care of just ourselves. We "all" can only take care of just ourselves, or children of course.  At some point most of us figure this out.

It is a "Very" dangerous time that we are living and all we can do is stay as far away from anyone that refuses to wear a mask or refuses to wash their hands or refuses to be responsible and do what is right because they are the fuel to the pandemic. So, stay away from them, far far away, simple as that.

We cannot live life thinking that someone owes us, this is not how life goes. We "Each" are different people and always will be. To get along and have peace, we must get over this attitude of expecting respect or that something is owed to us "or" that others are going to do what we perceive as the right thing to do.

We each have to be the ones to be what it is that we want things to be like. It is the only way to bring calm or a change around us.  Sometimes we must remove ourselves from situations, that is okay to do because we do not need permission and we must concentrate on taking care of ourselves so we do not become a statistic.

At some point in time we will get past this pandemic that we are going through.  Now is the time to figure out a temporary new normal and then a new normal.  I pray that it will be better than it was before all this started.  I pray that we are less rushed, I pray that families are closer, I pray that people will live more simple and sensible lives.  I cannot make this happen because I want it this way but I can make my own changes and I will and have been.

To sew on a button lean the needle towards the center when putting the thread in so it will have less friction around the threads when wearing the garment.

Our backyard once was bare, just grass and trees, nothing else. By doing nothing we have nothing, by doing something we have something. I wanted something in our backyard so I decided to get use to dirt under my nails.

The cucumbers have reached the top of the arbor now.  The Blackeyed Susans are so beautiful this year as I have stated in many recent posts.

We had no idea of what our backyard would look like when we started planting flowers, bushes, vegetables and trees.  We still do not because each year it changes and what is so exciting about gardening.

Gardening is like that button I was sewing on.  This morning the button popped off Charles pants as soon as he put them on.  Just after he left for work I sat down and sewed that button back on.  I did not necessarily want to sew the button since I had much to do but it was important.  Sadly today, people will actually discard clothing because it has a missing button.

Gardening is not always fun because it is heavy work and hot and dirty but to have food growing in the garden is worth the work.  Sewing a button back on is worth not having to purchase another pair of pants.

I guess what I am trying to say is we cannot be lazy or life will be costly and not very sensible.

This will be our first to harvest cabbage for the year.  I planted this last fall.  Growing vegetables takes time and nurturing and teaches us patience.

We know it will be very hot soon so we have been trying to get all the outside heavy work done because once it gets hot I will only be watering very early and harvesting because the heat is very hard for me.

I continue to be on stay at home orders per doctor so Charles is the only one to go out. I am thankful for this garden to keep me mentally sound or as sound as possible I might say.

We had another Outdoor Monday Lunch together since Charles still cannot come inside unless he has removed his clothing and bathed before coming into the house.

Last Monday as I blogged about lunch it was Chicken and vegetables.  This Monday I decided to create a casserole and called it "The missing Enchilada". I put refried beans in the bottom, then a layer of sauteed onions, then some canned chicken from the pantry that I heated and put a little chili powder, Cumin and garlic in the chicken and placed that over the beans and onion, then I layered cooked rice over that and some more sauteed onions on top of the rice.  Then I made a cheese sauce with grated cheddar cheese, milk and cream and melted and stirred then poured that over the rice.  Then grated a little more cheese and baked it in the oven until done. at 375 degrees.

Charles really enjoyed it and glad he did because we ate on it for three days. :)

In the little cup was dessert..

I don't always have a dessert in the house so I keep a box of little debbies just to have a simple dessert.  I like to freeze cake and such as that but with gardening I haven't had time to bake.

It has been extra busy lately with added chores. I soak the worn masks in very hot water and soap as I have shown before.  I wash them in the evening as Charles uses quite a few each day since he is working.  His clothing has to be washed differently now and much disinfecting to do.

This is the time to work in all these new things to do into our schedule since this virus may be with us for a long time.  I already know I must sew more masks until we have many masks because they need to be changed often.

I do not want to stay upset or worried about this virus all the time so we are doing our best to develop routines so we do not get complacent because that could be deadly.  We are treating this virus as serious as it is and not complaining about it.  We are thinking ahead in case it gets worse and figuring things out and making it part of our lives because it is.  We are already thinking ahead for when flu season comes and possibly mixes in with the coronavirus.

We need to make sure the pantry is as well stocked as afforded. It is a priority over any other spending.

I am dehydrating more vegetables such corn, beans, carrots, bell peppers and spinach. I will can and dehydrate as the garden starts to harvest.  I remind you, we live on a tiny lot inside the city, if we can do this so can you. If you do not have a place for a garden you can dehydrate or can vegetables from the store.  I do this for the vegetables I cannot grow.

This is spinach that I dehydrated. I can use it in omelets or on homemade pizza and such as that.

We are going to bed earlier because our bodies require more rest right now. We are trying to do the necessary things to keep ourselves safe and then enjoy our time together in whatever we are doing right here at home where it is safe.

I hope you can find your new normal and a way to keep yourself safe.  Grandma Donna
