About gDonna
The photo is my son and myself. Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.

Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. Piecing Fabric

March 23, 2016

In the past we used our fabric scraps, saved string, removed the buttons off old clothes and cut out the better part of the fabric on the item that was too stained or torn to use anymore.

Today many people just discard anything they do not like or want anymore. Some just shove it to the back of a drawer or closet and go out and buy something new.

Once we go back to living simple we become more relaxed and frugal which is a good thing.

This is one of my favorite aprons. It is very old and it was pieced together. The bottom of the apron has added fabric and their was not enough of the blue fabric to have enough to continue all the way across. So it was pieced with scraps of the blue making this apron even more special.

Looking at the apron which pulls over the head and has a simple back has been pieced together.

I have several quilts that have been hand quilted and as many of the beautiful hand quilts have evenly placed pieces some quilts are simply pieced with whatever scraps they had such as this quilt above. What is important is this is a nice warm quilt on a cold night.

Here is another quilt that has somewhat of a pattern but still simply pieces of fabric from old dresses, shirts, curtains, children's clothes and many other pieces that were cut up before discarding the unusable parts.

Some small pieces were used to make pot holders as is this very old pot holder we have.

This is a table runner that was pieced. I would consider this piece comforting because it shows that we should be thankful for the things we have and not waste.

I enjoy looking at this pieced flour sack cloth curtain. It is one I made to go over the french door.  I have some older fabric in my Granny's late 1800's trunk that sits at the foot of our bed that I am planning on using to piece new curtains for the window by the dinning room table. Since I will be doing this soon it made me think to do a post on piecing.

So before you throw away those old clothes think about the buttons, zippers and fabric before it gets tossed. Pajamas often make good quilting fabric.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone would become more aware that living a simple life has many rewards.

May the rain and the sun bring  you flowers and vegetables. Grandma Donna
