About gDonna
The photo is my son and myself. Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.

Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. A simple purpose

August 23, 2016

During our lifetime we go through many changes.  I wonder if we had just stayed the same with what we had where we would be?  I think this thought since we have been trying to live more like we did in the past.

I cannot say I have no regrets because we have  made mistakes along the way but I think change is perfectly normal.

I change things around in our house as often as the wind blows but that is only because I am trying to find the perfect spot before the decision is made that there is just not room for it.  Of course I am certainly not talking about the treadle and the irons are in working order and used often.

This rocker is well used, it certainly has a purpose.  I want to keep things simple and everything that is kept in the house has a purpose.  If it has no purpose than it is time to discard or donate.

Life outside our home, the world news, traffic has gotten so hectic these days that it makes me want to keep things even more simple at home.  A place of refuge and calm.

Then there is the side of me that feels the need to live prepared.  To keep a pantry and I feel this is sensible since there are many reasons that we should have food storage.  How can we take care of our family or feed ourselves during an emergency?  Food storage goes far back in history.

We have grocery stores filled with food readily available today but anything can happen, a storm or some kind of event can cause severe disruption and affect that supply. We have been warned and told many times to keep an emergency food stock.  A food stock is far more important than paying for things of no importance as many do today.  Name brand shoes and clothing, tattoos, piercings, the latest electronics and the fees to run those electronics.

Think basic, simple purpose.

It is good to have cooking skills and having the right tools in the kitchen can help to make a delicious meal.  A steamer has the simple purpose of steaming food which can be more healthy than fried food.

Soap has a simple purpose to clean.  These are a few soaps that have less ingredients than many synthetic soaps on the market.  The soap above is what I consider real soap or soap more like there was in the past.

A few years ago we were using synthetic soap filled with chemicals. We had just lived life buying products not giving it any thought because we simply thought if it was bad for us they would not sell it right?  Then my husband started with skin issues and I had my share too.

We realized that maybe what we were using was not so good and searched for real soap.  I remember our first bar and a familiar smell from long ago.  I almost cried because it was one of those moments when I felt we had been duped.

A good simple bar of pure soap can clean our body, wash our hair, wash our clothes and dishes. We can clean our floors, windows, bathrooms and more.  It absolutely has a simple purpose.

I will get back to organizing and cleaning our house now, keeping in mind does this have a purpose and does it help me to keep things simple?  Grandma Donna
