The Winter Season can be a very good time to sort, clean out files, shred, repair, mend, read and learn new things.
Every season has it's purpose. If we live as those did before us we would be more aware of the seasons. During the month of November I watched this little chipmunk scurrying around our backyard gathering nuts.
The little chipmunk( in the center back of this photo) had it's little cheeks full of nuts. It would pack it's cheeks so full that her cheeks would look like someone had taken a tire pump and puffed her out. For weeks she was busy running around the yard then disappearing to her little home.
Nature is amazing and if only we observe more and take notice we will learn from them.
Winter can be brutal in some areas but it is not a time to be miserable. If we live life with purpose we would use this time of year to repair, mend sort and organize.
In today's world it is common to find most any food any time of the year because food is imported all year around. Since winter brings on a chill in the house it is a good time to run that dehydrator since it creates heat. I like to dehydrate carrots and sweet potatoes because they do so well in the dehydrator.
This is carrots after dehydrating and they take up very little space to store. I generally air seal them into jars.
This is my wooden darning egg, my husband made it for me to use to darn socks. You can still purchase these online and they are very useful.
I pull the sock over the egg and then weave my thread back and forth over the hole. Now days many people just throw their socks away when there is a hole but this is very wasteful. Our generations before us would have never thrown out a sock due to a hole. It only takes a bit of time to mend a hole.
I like to sew during the winter months. This is something I sewed to keep my crochet hooks sorted.
Flip the top cloth over the the tops of the hooks.......
Then start rolling from the edge.......
Until you have a nice tidy roll. The ties are sewn in to the left and right side of the organizer. I did not have a pattern for this I just sat down and figured it out. I probably could make a pattern. When I go somewhere that I know I must sit and wait I take my crochet organizer and some thread and I have something to do while I am waiting.
This is a small rack that my husband built for me to store some of my threads. We kept adding to it so it has many sections. It is on the wall behind my door in the sewing room which is a spare bedroom. The door stays open most all the time so this rack is never seen because it is tucked away behind the door.
We have a first aid cabinet that hangs on the wall. Winter is a good time to sort and check expiration dates. When my parents were getting up in their years and we had to step in and help them this is one thing I noticed with both of them that their houses were full of expired medications, food and first aid supplies. I try to keep on top of this because I don't want my children to end up sorting my supplies. This cabinet is up high on the wall and has the poison control number on the front of the cabinet since we have Grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Make much use of this winter season. Sort, clean, repair, sew, mend and enjoy reading some good books. I think I will go have a cup of coffee now. Take care, Grandma Donna
