Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. Old Fashioned Peach Cobbler

Peach Cobbler just seems right.  

It all starts with fresh peaches.  Peach cobbler can be made with canned peaches but if it is peach season and you want fresh peach cobbler with fresh peaches this is a good recipe.

There are a lot of recipes for peach cobbler but if you want a simple cobbler that does not have all the spices to cover up the taste of the peaches this is the recipe.

This is our family recipe that has been around since I can remember.  I have changed it just a bit and reduced the sugar and I found a long time ago that self rising flour makes this just a bit lighter but if you only have plain flour then just add the baking powder.

I will type both ways, this photo is not clear because my recipe is fading.

The original recipe

1 Stick Butter melted in casserole

mix together the following

1 cup flour (all purpose)

1 1/2 cups sugar

3 level teaspoons baking powder

1 cup milk

Beat well and pour over melted butter in casserole

Put fresh peaches sliced with sugar to taste on this mixture and bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees,

The mixture on the bottom comes to the top and browns to a chewy delicious cake.

My Recipe, only a few changes.

The first thing that I do is pre-heat my oven to 350 degrees

Then I peel, pit and slice the peaches until I have about 4 cups of fresh sliced peaches then I sprinkle about 1/4 cup sugar and toss the sugar over the peaches and set aside. The peaches will settle and you will have less than 4 cups after tossing but that is enough because you did have 4 cups of sliced peaches to start.

1 Stick Butter melted in casserole

mix together the following

1 cup self rising flour

1 cup sugar

1 cup milk

Beat well, (I use a whisk) and pour into the melted butter in the casserole dish.

Spoon the peaches over this mixture and place in the oven and bake 1 hour 350 degrees.

I have found that if you cut a wedge out of your peach it will be easier to remove the pit.

So when you pull it apart both sides release the pit.  If it does not cut another wedge.

Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees

Peel, pit and slice 4 cups of peaches, I used 5 different size peaches 

Sprinkle 1/4 cup of sugar over the peaches.  I use organic sugar but plain white is ok too.

Toss the sugar and the peaches and set aside.

In the past I used a glass casserole dish but there was worry that it would bubble over and I had to put a pan and foil under it.  One day my brain woke up and figured out just put it in a deep casserole pan.

When the oven has reached 350 degrees put this in the oven until the butter is melted.

Mix the milk, flour and sugar until smooth

Pour the mixture into the hot melted butter, it will start cooking right away.

Spoon the sugared peaches over the top of the flour, milk, sugar mixture.

The peach mixture now covers the other mixture.  Notice the bottom mixture is already coming up to the top.  Place back in the oven and bake 1 hour.

Just dip and serve the cobbler.

I know some of you remember a dumpling type of peach cobbler which can be made by making a dough and cutting it into strips. I have enjoyed both types but this peach cobbler I have posted is the cobbler that our family mostly made.

I hope you enjoy this Peach Cobbler that tastes like "Peach Cobbler".
