Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. I know this is an older Post but I ran across it and wanted to comment.
I was reading the part where you used to use sticks to make houses with doors and all and then pretend play in them. One of the things we loved to do when at my grandmother's house in the autumn was to rake the fall leaves carefully into a floor plan of a house with doorways and little halls, etc. Whoever was actually in charge of removing the leaves probably wondered what the heck all of these little long piles were but my grandmother never stopped us and it was a lot of fun. Of course we also did our fair share of raking big piles and jumping into them as well!
