About gDonna
The photo is my son and myself. Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.

Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. Monday, April 5, 1943. 38 degrees.   Not very cold today and I had quite a large wash.  Went to Pub. Market this P.M. and got some cold meat for R-s supper and some sausage for tomorrow dinner.  Shall try and do my own carrying most the time as it is nice walking without rubbers had a small scurry of snow late afternoon and will be colder perhaps.

Tuesday, April 6, 1943. 18 degrees.  Cold morning but the sun came out bright. Cold all day and this is my fun day but I braced up enough to do all the ironing.  I wonder why most every Tuesday I seem to be tired.  Now I have the rest of the week to get my room in order.  I want to varnish stain the wood work and paint the window sash first must be cleaned but not but 2 doors and window.   Hope it warms up tomorrow.

Wednesday, April 7, 1943.  18 degrees.  Arthurs birth day.  Partly cleaned the small room and went down to Pub. Market and got liver which was quite tender.  Then went over street and paid tele and elec and got light oak stain and paint got 25 cent stain and 2 - 10 cts cent cans of light oak paint.  Got a can of chopped pressed ham Armors for .39 cts 5 points made and egg and ham sandwich for his lunch.  Nice Sun today.  My job grows must take up the linoleum and clean under it.

Thursday, April 8, 1943. Not as cold this morning Been working on my room all day finished cleaning and put the first coat of paint on the window then started with varnish stain.  Fish is scarce as there is a strike of the fish handlers so I got pork chops down to Reeves.  Made macaroni and cheese for Richards supper.  Must finish staining the wood work and the window another if dry white enamel paint.  Paper next week and should work for the Red Cross after that.  My Asters are coming but the tomato plants are not up.

Friday, April 9. 32 degrees.  Did a little more on my room and enamel coat on the window and varnished on doors base boards and now next week I start papering but the end is not yet as I'm going to take up the old linoleum and clean it and take up the papers and wash the floor think Ill put it back and the new one over it.  Must send for it so I can finish.  Was going out and get some canned meat for Richards supper but found only had 3 points so didn't go.  Had a chicken from Corks and stuffed it.

Saturday, April 10.  30 degrees.  Cooked a chicken and had it for dinner with ice cream then tomorrow my dinner will be all cooked. Made a mince pie and bot a cake had some A & P donuts and some beans so am already for Sunday.

Sunday, April 11. 30 degrees.  Had a nice bath when I got up this morning in a big pan with the oil stove in the toilet and thats better than just a wash cloth.  I punked up and went to Church and put in envelope.  Didnt hear much of the sermon suppose I'm some deaf but he doesn't speak so plainly as some.  Mr. Marshal died yesterday funeral at the house 3:30 Wednesday.  I think he grieved over his son in the war poor man and not very good health.

That is the end of this weeks diary reading.  We will be back next week to continue the diaries.  Grandma Donna
