About gDonna
The photo is my son and myself. Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.

Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. The First Day

September 22, 2016

Today is the First Day of Fall and I am ready for cooler weather. It has been a long hot summer.  There is one problem, we are still in the 90's.

I am determined to wear my favorite vest very soon so yesterday I freshened it up and it is ready to wear as I am "anticipating" cool weather will be here soon.

I like first day's of things.  The first of year, the first day of the month, the first day of Spring and so on.

I like the first part of the day or the first part of the evening when it is finally time to sit down for knitting.

The first time to learn to embroidery or crochet.

When we are born we are an open slate ready to learn. Some have a rocky start in life for various reasons and there is no one to teach them but the good part is that today is a new day and we can learn how to do new things no matter how young or old by studying and practicing.

It is very rewarding to make things with our hands.  There is always a beginning to learning how to do something. People that skilled at what they do were not good at first, they had to learn and practice.

As we get older there are many firsts too.

The first grey hair, the first wrinkle, the first time to look in the mirror and discover those aren't bed wrinkles, they are here to stay.

I remember the day I went to the store to buy yarn and a lady walked up to me and said, "You look like someone I can ask how to choose the right yarn I need for something I am going to make".  Was it my Grandmotherly look?  My wrinkles?

After the third time of this happening on different occasions, I embraced that I looked yarn wise, and assisted everyone that asked because once one person asks several will come up as soon as you have helped that one and they will ask a question. One day I was able to help a lady pick out supplies to make a gift for a friend that crochets.  She had been ill and her friend wanted to cheer her up.

I know that this has to do with there is no one in a store anymore that will assist a customer but I like to think I am now yarn wise.

It does seem to me that if stores want to increase their sales, especially those that sell yarn, they should have someone in that department to help people.

So I have another first, this is one of our new mini salt shakers I purchased at a thrift store.  I am giving them a good hot scrub.  I think you can buy these in bulk from some places.

I have been put on a low sodium diet due to the Meniere's disease I have.  These small shakers hold just under two teaspoons.  This should be two days of total salt I can have which seems like a lot of salt but this is total in everything I eat.

I had to get creative how to dry the inside of these small cubes so I put them overnight in front of a fan.

I made a wax paper funnel to have a tiny tip to fill them, probably why someone donated them to the thrift.

I will do my best to watch my salt intake, we all need some salt in our diet because salt also helps to balance our fluids and help our nerves and muscles.  There are other things too but we need to be careful with salt, not too much and not too little.

Morning cranberry juice....

This blog is my open door to connect all of us to learn or remember how things were in the past.

It is a place to show others that living a more simple can change your life.

This juice glass is  depression glass.  Many of you have heard of depression glass but do you know what it is?

Depression glass was made during the 1920's and 1930's.  It was inexpensive glassware with an elegant look. It was distributed free to entice people to purchase items or sold at a very low price. It took on the name depression glass due to Great Depression and became collectable during the 1960's.

I am happy it is the first day of fall.  Life can be happy by just simple things like when I get to wear my sweater vest. :).  I will have another first day, the first day of the year to wear my sweater vest.
