It has been a very busy time here at our home. We have been working more outside due to the warm up.
Most days lately I don't come back in until the sun starts setting.
But there is still much to do inside such as laundry, cooking and keeping things clean.
I added a curtain over the yarn shelves to keep dust from settling on the yarn and thread.
I still move things around a bit as this is home, it is our space to make interesting or more manageable.
I have been cooking easy meals since I have been spending so much time outside. A quick peach cobbler is a very easy dessert/snack food to have around.
The center of this peach cobbler has some extra special buttery peaches.
The mornings have started early so I can have the breakfast and what was leftover from the night before finished up and get the laundry on the line so I can start with the garden projects.
When I get the laundry hung I say a prayer for sunshine and wind.
This wood post with the hanging baskets has been moved to another location as we are going to try and grow the most vegetables and fruits we have ever grown in our little yard. So we added another cattle panel trellis in this area.
So now when I hang laundry I will be surrounded by cantaloupe, squash, cucumbers, beans, tomatoes and more. :)
I know that it may seem we are not living a 1930's life but we are moving in that direction. The more I study and read the more I realize that growing food was one of the most important work for the families. Many people had a plot of land large or small to grow food, not all but many. They did not have grocery stores as we have today. They had markets of different kinds. One may have gone to several different markets to get the things they needed.
There were general stores and grocery stores came along where you go to the counter and give them the list of things you needed. Then the larger cities started getting supermarkets where you could take your basket and walk around serving yourself. But the small towns around the United States did not change quickly. Most of my family lived rural in the past, some did live in cities but a city was not as we know it today.
Growing food, canning and preserving food was very important as was quilt making. Food and warmth.
So once we get all our cattle panels up we will have more grow space. It will not look like farm land but it will help us to grow food.
If you have children still at home one of the very familiar things you hear is, "I'm hungry", and we all have to eat. If we have our ducks in order so to speak we can have more order in our home.
We either eat out all the time which is expensive and a very questionable diet or we keep food in our home for cooking meals. If we can our food or have freezer food we can make quick meals. If we have a plan and a routine we can do much better with cooking and many of us develop a quick go to meal to make.
We cannot be completely sustainable, at least for now but we hope to do better.
There are many vegetables that are easy to grow, green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers to name a few. I have grown many vegetables in garden pots or flower pots so if you would like to grow vegetables an have never tried start small or big but take that step.
As some of you know I like to name things. We recently named our cattle tanks the days of the week.
Now we have named where we live, "Thursday's Pie Urban Homestead". So we are Homesteaders. We have expanded our comfortable home and our garden as an extension of our home.
I came up with this name because of reading the diaries. One of the diaries she was making a pie on a Thursday and I thought about how Thursday was often the day to visit or have visitors as they said back then, called on. A pie or cake was often bake as people visited with each other often.
What would you call your home or apartment, wherever you live? If you decide to name your home let me know what you call it. I will be painting a hanging sign as soon as Charles gets it readied up. "Thursday's Pie Urban Homestead" I like that :)
