I agree, I wish I had know them both. Imagine all they could teach us. We still have a Ben Franklin store 12 miles from us. It smells old and the floors are original wood and creak. But they have anything you could want!

I absolutely love your blog Grandma Donna. Have been following it for some time now, and would love to read and enjoy every single post you have. Little by little I am getting them read. I know how busy you are, living the simple life is hard work, and definitely time consuming. I can totally relate to much of the things you write about, and how you are living like the past. You wisdom and experience is both an inspiration and a treasure to so many people. Thank you and God Bless you and Charles for sharing your lives with us, I truly appreciate it. Sending a hug across the miles, Karla

I want to apologize for the jumbled diary readings, I have gone back and corrected the problem. I was away from home and so I typed the diary readings in notepad so I could post them online when I got home. I had separations between the diary entries but for some reason, it posted them with all the words running together. I think I have corrected the problem.
I thank you for your wonderful comments. Darlene, I wondered if there were any more Ben Franklin stores around. :) Grandma Donna

Love reading about Lil and Bob and Lena! Thank you for your wonderful blog - I look forward to it every week! I’ve been wondering - what does “worked Nuco” mean in the Lil and Bob diary?

Penny, I am happy that you enjoy the diary readings. Nuco was a butter substitute and during the war butter was rationed so people were using this butter substitute. I believe that it was white and they colored it to make it look like butter and they would say worked Nuco. I was something I frequently see in these older diaries. Thank you for your question. Donna

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful entries. I'm assuming Lena is from NH? I only ask because I live not to far from West Lebanon and their weather is very similar to ours. My husband started the woodstove a few days ago and we had to open the doors and windows it got so hot!

I remember the Ben Franklin. Knew it had been around for years, but didn't realize it was around in the 40's so fun to hear of it. Last I remember is it went out of business in the 90's sometime.
I like the diaries so am glad to see them back.
