Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.
Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables.
I did not live through the great depression or world war II but I did listen to many stories that my parents and grandparents would tell me and I did live in the time and area where many folks still lived without indoor bathrooms and no electricity. Our telephones were partylines and I remember our new black and white television.
My son, my first child was born the year that Lyndon Baines Johnson left office and Richard M Nixon was sworn into office. A gallon of gas cost .35 cents and the Vietnam war continued.
I am a wife, mother, grandmother, sister and I am not a professional
at anything. I worked most of my life outside the home after my
children were in school and up until I quit work in year 2000 to take
care of my aging parents.
My grammar could be a bit off because I am a little on the country side of being city. This website was developed as a place to put old family photos and genealogy to share with my family. Time has gone by, the economy has taken a very bad turn downward and I found my genealogy site resembling today’s time. That is when the thought came to me that I should remove the genealogy sections and use what knowledge I did have from listening to my Grandparents and Great Grandparents. They told me many stories of how they survived the Great Depression and what they did before electricity came to them such as my Grandmother kept milk cold by putting it down in the well.
My Grandfather died during the 1918 Flu Pandemic and times were very bad for many families. My Grandmother also took the flu but did not die. She had to go on with two small babies as well as did many others that were left without parents or spouses. The 1918 flu pandemic was very bad.
The Great depression was the most talked about, but in history there have been many difficult times and for many reasons. There does not have to be a pandemic or depression or recession to put a family out in the street.
My husband and I live simple but comfortable. We live in a small city and we were getting by pretty fair until gas prices turned into a yoyo, food prices only know one way to go and that is up, electricity got more expensive and a few of our appliances decided to quit. We like others started feeling the crunch.
We decided start working on any method we could to reduce these effects on our budget. We cannot live as our Grandparents lived because hardly anyone has a well out in their yard to use to chill milk. Most of us don’t live on a farm or happen to have a milk cow. Most of us don’t have vegetables growing out in a field nor do we have the same equipment that our ancestors had that helped them live without electricity.
We have had been trying ways to save money living in todays time, living in the city and using our simple space that we do have.
So that is about me, simple and willing to try most anything to help us all get by.
This photo to the left is my beautiful daughter when she was a child. She is now grown, married and has a son.
My daughter was born when Richard M. Nixon was president. She was born the year that a rare June hurricane made landfall in the Florida Panhandle. Hurricane Agnes caused severe damage as it moved inland and up through Maryland and Pennsylvania causing Billions of dollars in damage. A stamp cost .10 cents and the top movie was the Godfather.
