As some of you know we are getting ready to start our one year living like 1942. I have explained this in other posts so I will not go into that again.
It is taking a lot of research to prepare ourselves to do this better than we did our year of 1943. As I am writing this article this evening it is December 28th. If it were December 28, 1941 then we would still be traumatized by what has happened to our Country. We were attacked at Pearl Harbor only 21 days ago. Our President Franklin D Roosevelt declared that the US was at war. Our study will be the homefront. We all have heard many war stories but the homefront is something that has less information.
The year before last we studied the homefront rationing of 1943 and we learned a lot but we missed so much by not starting at the beginning of the war. Many of you that follow my blog live in other countries and the war started much earlier for you so you would be knee deep in rationing at this point.
But we are now working our way through the details for us as we only have three days left before we start our 1942!
I am finding that there will be many projects of organizing our kitchen cabinets as I have a book that can guide me.
There will be many sewing, crochet and knitting projects and they will be from 1942 or before 1942.
The public library has the daily newspapers that is just full of information. One thing very frustrating is this crochet pot holder and dish cloth in the December 1941 paper I just read has a place for you to send off for the pattern it is one dime to send in and gives the address but sadly we are not really living december 1941 so we cannot really send for it.
It does say that the dishcloth is 12 inches square, the 8 sides pot holder is 6 & 1/2 inches across. Center is made of white crochet cotton, banded in bright blue and sunshiney yellow and edged in white. Takes little crochet cotton and the stitch is big and loose so that it is quickly crocheted.
Here is a little bit better picture of it. Any of you advanced crochet specialist out there want to figure it out or happen to have a pattern, send me the pattern and I will post it to share with everyone.
I am in the process of getting rid of our plastic bottles and moving things to glass. I went thrifting today and found a milk glass ponds cold cream jar shown in photo above. We want to get the feel of the 40s better this time around.
There will be new recipes to work on and we are actually going to follow two cookbooks from that period. One is a wartime cooking.
I am waiting for a financial book to arrive so we can set our budget to 1942, I hope this will actually teach us some new things as we feel going back is the best thing to go forward stronger.
We have one television left in our house and it is behind this curtain. This is our movie theater. People went to the movies in 1942 and so we will use our dvd to play a movie on Friday or Saturday nights should we choose to go to the movie. That will be our popcorn date night. :) There was no televisions during this time.
We will be listening to old time radio shows which will be fun.
I will close, I have much to do. We are getting excited because New Years is almost here. Again this is about what was happening on the homefront in 1942. We started reading the newspaper since the day the Japanese Bombed Pearl Harbor (December 7th 1941) so we can actually have the feel of things by New Years Day.
