I just realized that last weeks diary readings were still sitting in my draft and did not publish. No one mentioned or asked about this and I did not notice. I just sat down to type this weeks reading and here this was sitting in draft. So there will be two readings this week, this one and the one I am getting ready to type. So I better get to work.
We continue the 1943 diary reading of Lil and Bob and Lena and her son Richard. To read all the diary readings from the beginning look under Living like the past in my Menu and go back to January 1, 2022 and that will be where the first diary post is located.
Now we pick up with this weeks reading of Lil and Bob. When we remember the way things were in 1943 we know that many people still did not have refrigeration and used the ice boxes that required ice blocks to keep the food cool. A few times now Ice is mentioned in the diary posts so Lil and Bob may still have the old style ice box. There was ice delivery during this time.

We continue the diary reading of Lena and Richard.
Friday, August 6, 1943. A lot cooler today and a brisk wind. I put down yesterday what I had for dinner today and yesterday had the salmon which was so bad I had to throw it away but seems the cat is hungry enough to eat it with milk. Went out and dug weeds in the garden. Hoed the few string beans just coming and the peppers . Picked a dish of shell beans for tomorrow. Ordered a fowl which Mr. Cook brot today for Sunday and shall try and get Richard some P. Chops from Joes if he has them.
Saturday, August 7. Slicked up the house and didn't go only down to Joes as I found what I wanted by ordering of nice Chops and bread and got apples and potatoes and Rye bread at Joes. Ironed and mended Richards 3 pants etc. Nice and cool. Richard brot me home a big new mop and I washed the kitchen floor with it. Picked shell beans yesterday and had them the chops didn't come time enough for dinner.
Sunday, August 8. This is another nice day seems a bit warmer but still very comfortable was alone all day and home. wrote some letters P.M. and should write more. Cooked the chicken I stuffed last night and put up one can of it.
Monday, August 9. Did a very small washing then went out and picked a big kettle of shell beans to can and shelled them this evening so to can tomorrow. Got in the clothes and went over street posted letter and did a few errands. Got a can of tongue in Newburys for Richards supper. Some how got very tired guess it was the way I felt.
Tuesday, August 10. Canned the shell beans only had 3 qts. but every little helps. Mrs. Valier called about the hospital canning, must look up my jars and see how much I can give. I may have quite a lot of shell beans but am afraid ill have to give tomatoes different ways. This is a rainy day altho we have a new moon.
Wednesday, August 11. Finished a little ironing called up Dr. Stephens and I guess he thot I was pretty bad as my foot seems to be running sore. He gave me a prescription some different and said if it wasn't better by Monday call him up and must keep off my feet. How can I? Someone has to do a little and there's no one else.
Thursday, August 12. This is quite a day rested then went out and picked the shell beans time they were picked can them and with it all the pipe on the hot water tank burst and I had quite a time getting it stopped and when Richard came he put on the hose and drained the hot water off. Must get a plumber as no hot water.
End of this weeks diary readings. Oh my Lena is really having a difficult time, hope she is better next week. Grandma Donna
